He was one of the sons of film and stage producer former Lou Salvador and he has siblings, most of them also actors and actresses such as Alona Alegre, Leroy Salvador, Lou Salvador Jr., Jobelle Salvador, Ross Rival and Deborah Sun, the two siblings are from different mothers. He has also a niece named Maja Salvador, a famous young Filipina actress. Philip is married to Emma Ledesma, and he had a son named Joshua with Kris Aquino, whom he had a short affair with. Philip admits that he only sees his son occasionally.

It was in 2006 that he was convicted in an estafa case and was sentenced to a 20 years in prison. The case was filed by Cristina Decena, one of the women she was rumored to have an affair with. The case is still pending with the Court of Appeals in 2009. It was also in 2009 that Philip had beaten a bus driver named Michael Baino when he almost accidentally hit the actor's car.

Philip was trying to have a comeback some years back after his career slowed down because of legal impediments. He is now a born-again Christian, and is thankful that he had been given a new chance, and he also gave credit to his friend Senator Bong Revilla for helping him in many ways possible.

Philip Salvador started his career in 1971 in the movie "Adios Mi Amor." He appeared in so many movies playing bit roles until Director Lino Brocka mentored him. They made almost 10 movies together "Ang Tatay Kong Nanay," 'Mananayaw," "Gumising Ka Maruja," "Hayop sa Hayop," 'Init," "Jaguar," "Bona," 'Kontrobersiyal," "Cain at Abel," and "Apex." It was in the movie "Jaguar" that he was given the first starring role and became an entry in the Cannes Film Festival. It was followed by "Bayan Ko: Kapit Sa Patalim," another Lino Brocka movie, where he received three FAMAS Best Actor Awards. In 1989, he starred in the movie 'OraPronobis," the story of which revolved on human rights under former President Corazon Aquino administration. The movie was then banned by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board or the MTRCB.

In the 1980's and 1990's, Philip Salvador made additional movies, which included several biopics such as "Balweg," "Boy Negro," "Commander Dante," 'Joe Pring: Homicide Manila Police," and "Ka Hector." He had won another FAMAS Best Actor Award in the movie "Bobby Barbers: Parak," for his performance as Senator Robert Barbers. He then gradually transitioned into supporting roles in 2003 in the movie "Utang Ng Ama," and "Baler" in 2008. He also appeared in the television series entitled "Maging Sino Ka Man," and "Ang Panday," all in ABS-CBN. Philip is hoping that one day soon he will be given the much needed comeback movie or appearance in the movies or TV programs, the industry where he truly belongs.
