Vilma Santos Does First Indie Film As A Tribute To The Extras (Bit Players)Star For All Seasons Vilma Santos said she agreed to do the independent film, "Ekstra," as a tribute to the people she has worked with in the past. It's not about being a star or wanting to win an award. For her, she wants people to know she can also do things for free and share a little of herself on screen without aiming for an award.
"Yung being artist ko, nasa puso ko pa rin. So it’s a tribute sa mga extras, kung yun lang. Doing an indie film is just a contribution. Award is just a prestige, bonus if you do good, if you did well. I can do things for free and a little share."
"Ekstra" is Santos' first indie film. She wanted to try to do an indie film for a long time because she has been hearing good feedback about it.
Also, she trusts the direction that Jeffrey Jeturian wants to take. The public is equally excited about Santos' first indie film that the trailer of "Ekstra" on YouTube already reached 100,000 views.
Aside from Santos, Superstar Nora Aunor is also doing an independent film with director Mes de Guzman. Hers is entitled "Ang Kwento Ni Mabuti."
Santos' "Ekstra" is nominated for the Directors' Showcase category of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival this July while Aunor's "Ang Kwento Ni Mabuti" will participate in the 1st CineFilipino Film Festival.
When it comes to the two stars' rivalry, the Batangas governor hopes it can be a rivalry based on "maturity." She said they are not getting any younger and their fans should stop comparing them like before.
Although Santos admitted it is healthy for artists to feel some pressure from a rivalry, she said fans should attack the rivalry with a little more caution. She understands the rivalry between her and Aunor will never fade away though.
Talking about "Ekstra," it can be noticed how proud the Star For All Seasons is about it. She said that for the first time in her career, she will be tackling a different role--that of an extra. Since she was nine years old, she has always been the main protagonist of a film.
In this film, Santos is proud to say the bit players or extras are given their time to shine as well. It is important for artists, she added, to also give importance to the bit players.
"Ekstra" will also have special participations from Piolo Pascual, Marian Rivera, Pilar Pilapil, Cherry Pie Picache, Richard Yap and Cherie Gil.
In the film's trailer, it can be seen that Gil will torture Santos. At one point, the popular contrabida even refused to slap Santos on the face for another time.
Santos said Gil was supposed to hit her in the face for the second time, but the veteran actress already refused to do so. Gil said she has never slapped the Star For All Seasons on the face for all the films they did together.
Through the film, Santos was also able to meet some of the stars, producers and directors in the indie industry.
"Iba rin pala ang world ng indie. Nakilala ko rin sila, iba ang grupo nila sa mainstream, iba sila. So, karangalan ko rin na ma-meet ang indie family."
She also wants to prove, Santos said, that she can still contribute as an artist without talking about money.
