Megan Young May Lose Chance To Win Miss World 2013Many observers agree that the Philippines has a strong chance this year to finally bring home the elusive Miss World crown. Miss World Philippines 2013 Megan Young is all prepared to win the competition. She is set to leave the country for Jakarta, Indonesia on Tuesday (September 3).
But are you aware that Megan might lose that chance to finally bring home the bacon in the beauty contest? No, she is not disqualified. But there are controversies hounding this year’s Miss World competition. And there is a possibility that the beauty contest may not push through.
That is because several parties are protesting the pageant’s decision to hold the contest in Indonesia this year. This would be the first time for the beauty contest to be held in the country and in a Muslim nation.
Opposition based on religion
At first, some Indonesian politicians protested because Miss World would require its contestants to ramp on stage wearing nothing but skimpy bikinis. Muslim countries are usually restrictive about such practices of beauty contests.
Miss World organizers remedied this problem by scrapping the swimsuit competition of the contest this year. They thought this decision would appease the protesting faction in the country. But they have learned that doing so would not be sufficient.
An Indonesia Minister has formally protested his opposition to the staging of Miss World in the country. Minister Suryadharma Ali has expressed that he and the Indonesian Ulema Council strongly oppose the pageant as Miss World does not fit with basic Islamic teachings.
The group is particularly opposing the pageant’s tradition of parading women without covering the immodest parts of their body. It is not clear yet if Miss World organizers would again do necessary action to address this concern.
Waiting for new development
As of this writing, there is no news yet if Indonesia would cancel its approval of the pageant or if it would allow it to push through. But according to insiders, if the Indonesian government decides to prohibit the staging of the pageant, the organizers might find it difficult to quickly find a replacement venue.
The coronation night is set on September 28. It would be hard, if not impossible for Miss World to bring the pageant to another country at the last minute. Thus, there is a possibility that this year’s Miss World might be postponed for next year.
If that happens, it would clearly serve as an impediment for Megan to grab her chance to bring home the crown. It would also not be clear if she would be allowed to represent the country again in next year’s pageant. The next few days would be critical for the pageant.
For now, all we can do is to wish Megan the best of luck. Last September 1, a send off party was mounted for her by Miss World Philippines. In a recent interview, she said she is well prepared to face the competition and possibly bring another honor to the country.
