Dingdong Dantes: 5 More Years With GMA, Hailed ‘Kapuso Primetime King’Dingdong Dantes is still a Kapuso.
Ending speculations about his possible transfer to another network, Dantes signed a new five-year contract to stay with GMA Network at the Manila Polo Club on Saturday.
The event was attended by Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, Mr. Gilberto Duavit, at Mr. Felipe L. Yalong, Ms. Lilybeth Rasonable, Atty. Annette Gozon-Abrogar, Ms. Redgie Magno and Dantes’ manager Perry Lansigan among others.
Dantes: GMA Is More Than Just A Network To Me
Dantes has been with GMA Network for a very long time. According to the actor, he has been with GMA for a decade and a half.
With the signing of a new five-year contract with the Kapuso Network, Dantes is assuring GMA that he will stay a Kapuso for 20 years. Dantes can be said to have started out in 1995 in the youth-oriented GMA show T.G.I.S.
GMA appears to prefer Dantes be in their camp for as long as possible. When the event started at the Manila Polo Club, GMA was asked how many years the contract Dantes will sign stipulates.
Gilberto Duavit, the network’s chief operating officer and executive vice president joked, “Wala hong katapusan ang kontrata. Habambuhay po!” This elicited laughs from members of the press and those who were present at the event, The Philippine Entertainment Portal reports.
As for Dantes, the actor, who was introduced as the “Kapuso Primetime King”, appears to really appreciate GMA. In fact, he says he sees the Kapuso Network as more than just a TV station that gives him work.
“Alam n'yo po, just like any other profession, sa career po nila, darating po talaga ang crossroad sa kanila. A time wherein magkakaroon ng ibang opportunity. A time wherein magkakaroon ng ibang option,” Dantes said.
Dantes was referring to other offers from other networks which he and his manager have not been shy to admit to have come.
“Pero at the end of the day, lahat ng mga guiding principles, e, uuwi rin sa kung ano ang sinasabi ng puso,” he said.
When asked what made him decide to stay a Kapuso, Dantes replied, “Alam n'yo, maraming dahilan, pero para sa akin, ang pinakaimportante is throughout the years, around fifteen years, practically half of my lifetime, they were there to support me noong nag-uumpisa ako, nag-uumpisa akong mangarap.”
“Hindi ko pa alam kung ano ang magiging direksiyon ko sa buhay… Noong panahon kung kailan I failed, noong mga panahon kung kailan hindi ko alam kung ano ang gagawin ko, hanggang ngayon, nandiyan pa rin sila,” he added.
“Kumbaga, they are always there to support me in fulfilling my dreams. Lahat ng pupuwede ko pang gustong gawin…And that support, like what I’ve said, is beyond just being company and network and just a house to hone my talents, but I see it as a home,” the superstar continued.
Kapuso Primetime King
In what some would call a token of appreciation from GMA, the network is dubbing Dantes as the “Kapuso Primetime King”.
Others would say, however, that the title should have been given to Dantes even earlier than now.
Nonetheless, Dantes does not agree to that.
“I wouldn’t want to say that. I am more grateful... Kumbaga, siguro for all the years na nandito ako at nakatrabaho ko ang GMA, para sa akin, that’s more than enough,” Dantes said, PEP reports.
“All those years” was really emphasized Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, when he said, “Alam n'yo, gusto ko lang din i-emphasize na magla-labinlimang taon na si Dingdong sa GMA. Siguro, ito ang magpapatunay na marunong din ang GMA na gumawa ng Primetime King and also Primetime Queen—and Dingdong is the living example of that.”
Mr. Duavit noted, “We are very, very happy about the signing today. In fact nung nabanggit na 15 years na si Dingdong na Kapuso, parang kailan lang Dong was the very first exclusive contract that I recall signing many, many years ago. This event today somehow gives us that gratification and we’re honored that we’ve grown together, ang GMA at si Dong. At malayong malayo pa ang mararating natin together.”
As Dantes is now the “Kapuso Primetime King”, he and Marian Rivera should now be considered the “power couple” of GMA. Rivera was earlier dubbed the “Kapuso Primetime Queen”.
Dantes’ Decision Not Influenced By Rivera
Speaking of Rivera who also recently signed a new contract to stay with GMA, Dantes’ was naturally asked whether his girlfriend’s decision to renew her contract made an impact on his decision to stay with the Kapuso Network.
According to the actor, Rivera’s decision did not affect his decision.
“Ever since, lahat ng desisyon, ang desisyon namin, we work separately. Hindi namin binabase ang desisyon namin sa kung ano ang desisyon ng isa’t isa. So, independent po ang aming mga desisyon,” he said.
5 Years Not That Long
Dantes was also asked why he would agree to such a long contract. The actor reacted by saying that five years is not that long.
“Alam n'yo, sa totoo lang, looking back, noong pumirma ako ulit sa kanila, sa GMA, sa Executive Lounge nila, sa Boardroom nila, that was three years ago. Imagine, I couldn’t believe how fast time flies. And for all you know, yung five years, e, mabilis lang din ‘yan,” he said.
“Siguro sa dami rin kasi ng workload na ibinibigay sa akin. Nandoon din sa fulfillment sa trabahong ibinibigay nila sa akin. Everything, I look forward [to],” Dantes added.
Furthermore, he stressed that the contract he signed with GMA is “pretty much the same” as the contract he signed three years ago.
When members of the pressed teased him that maybe the only difference now is that he is now “the highest paid Kapuso actor”, Dantes did not confirm or deny.
“You know what, I wanna be politically correct by saying that I am not in the position to answer that. It’s classified. Pero more than the monetary amount, more than the compensation, it’s the commitment both our hearts have and, I think, that’s for me is priceless,” he said.
Speaking of the workload Dantes talked about, the actor is set to star in the upcoming Kapuso show “Genesis” which will premier this first week of October.
In a report from GMA News, Dantes elaborated on his role in the new show.
“It’s a story about pagmamahal sa kapwa, pagmamahal sa pamilya at pagmamahal sa bayan. It’s a story about hope sa kabila ng mga bagay na nangyayari sa paligid mo. Sa katotohanan, isa siyang konsepto that deals with day-to-day reality: lahat ng nangyayri sa mundo, lahat ng nangyayari sa mundo,” he said.
“Isa po akong PSG na masisira ‘yung kanyang pag-iisip dahil magiging cynical siya at mawawalan siya ng gana hanggang sa nabigyan siya ng isang importanteng task,” he continued.
Asked about other future projects, Dantes said he cannot speak when projects lined up for him will specifically be made.
“Hindi naman natin puwedeng ilagay specifically ang mga kaganapan for the next five years,” he said.
“But siguro, the most important thing now is the commitment that we both have. My commitment to them and their commitment to me: that we will collaborate in pursuing my dreams and pursuing what is best for the network,” he added.
The actor said that he still wants to do a lot more. What are these?
“Well, halimbawa po, once a year, e, magkakaroon ako ng TV special na dati naman, e, meron din. Although, hindi rin nabigyan ng pagkakataon na magawa ko dahil siyempre, because probably yung nakapilang content na kailangan pang ipalabas. And like what I’ve said, yung pagpunta sa GMA Pinoy TV internationally, mas magiging visible ako dun,” he said.
GMA is ramping up its promotion and rollout of GMA Pinoy TV, its competitor to ABS-CBN’s international offerings.
Dantes also revealed that he is thankful for the trust GMA has given him. Asked if this means he will be directing shows soon, he said that, “Yes, that’s also possible.”
A Very Thankful Dantes
Meanwhile, a report from GMA News captures more of how grateful Dantes is because of the opportunity given to him.
“I am very grateful for the trust and support that GMA has given me. Throughout the years, I have been blessed with projects that have honed me as a dancer, a host, an actor, and even as a director,” Dantes said.
“Dahil nga siguro Kapuso, parang alam na nila lahat ng nilalaman ng aking puso, and I know that GMA will always be there to support me as I move forward in my career. Marami pa akong gustong gawin and I look forward to fulfilling them bilang Kapuso. I am and have always been proud to be a Kapuso. I will carry on,” he added.
As for his new title, Dantes noted, “Kinokonsider ko po siya na isang biyaya, isang gift, tulad siguro ng kahit sino sa atin na makatanggap ng isang regalo, we will be grateful, kaya iyan ang isa mga dahilan kaya I’m very grateful this morning because of that.”
He also promised to do more because of all the blessings given to him.
“Mas importante siguro diyan kung ano ang mangyayari after, kaya nadito po ako renewing my commitment to the network, and siguro, mas masusuklian ko pa ‘yan ng mas maigi sa aking dedication sa aking trabaho,” he noted.
