Director Wenn Deramas Made Sure ‘Galema’ Goes To ABS-CBN And Not TV5Box-office director Wenn Deramas has disclosed that he personally talked to local comics novelist Jim Fernandez and his family just to make sure he would acquire the rights for ‘Galema, Anak ni Zuma.’ Consequently, the comics novel would once again be immortalized through a TV series of the same title, to be aired over ABS-CBN.
Wenn revealed that TV5 also had an offer to acquire the rights to make the novel a TV series. As expected, TV5’s offer was so huge that it had to be very difficult for anyone not to turn down that bid. Sources claim that the cash amount tendered was twice the amount ABS-CBN was willing to pay. Thus, Wenn had to personally talk to the Fernandezes to make sure he and ABS-CBN would purchase the rights to the story.
Beating TV5 offer
So how did the director do it knowing that they could not match the cash offer for the rights from TV5? The director revealed that it was simple. He just assured the Fernandez family that he would protect the original flow of the popular comics novel. He also reminded the family that ‘Galema’ would definitely reach out to much more audiences, which TV5 could not do.
Logically, the Fernandez family chose to make ‘Galema’ popular once again. Thus, they sold the rights to ABS-CBN, which took many years to prepare to make the TV series. Now, ‘Galema’ is finally ready to get into the boob tube through a TV series that would be aired on the network’s ‘Kapamilya Gold’ afternoon block starting September 30 (if the schedule would not change).
Why is he so insistent to pursue the project? Wenn recalled that he started conceptualizing about TV adaptation of ‘Galema’ as early as 2005. For many years now, it has become a common knowledge that he would do the TV series and that it would be starred by Andi Eigenmann, who became an instant primetime star when her ‘Agua Bendita’ became a hit.
But Andi had to take a showbiz hiatus when she got pregnant. When Wenn finished taping for ‘Kapag Puso’y Nasugatan,’ he made sure ‘Galema’ would be his next TV project for ABS-CBN. He thought it is about time to finally endear the ‘Zuma’ characters once again to Filipino audiences.
But many people are asking why ‘Galema’ would be aired on the afternoon block instead of the network’s Primetime Bida. To this, Wenn disclosed that it was his decision to air it in the afternoon. He personally asked ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio to make sure ‘Galema’ would be aired on the afternoon block.
Wenn thinks there is nothing wrong if the TV series would not be part of Primetime Bida. That is because he believes that ‘Galema’ would attract more loyal viewers in the afternoon, just like how ‘Mara Clara’ was able to change the afternoon TV landscape in the 1990s. Wenn is confident that his loyal viewers would still watch the show no matter what time slot it is assigned to.
