DSWD Steps In; Intervenes In Freddie Aguilar’s Relationship With A MinorFinally, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has announced that it would intervene in the romantic relationship between 60-year-old Freddie Aguilar and his 16-year-old girlfriend. The department said it is within its jurisdiction to conduct a probe into the May-December affair to protect the girl who is still considered as a minor under the country’s law.
Freddie made a controversy last week when he attended an awards show with his very young girlfriend in tow. Some people criticized him for bringing along a trophy girlfriend who was obviously very much younger than him. In fact, she can even be his grandchild. The 44-year gap is really odd.
Seduction and child abuse
Since his resurfacing, many people asked if it was alright for a man of his age and stature to come out and have a romantic relationship with a minor. Some legal experts have asserted that he could possibly be sued for seduction and child abuse because of his decision to pursue a relationship with her.
Under the country’s Revised Penal Code, child abuse is a public offense. Government agencies like DSWD could possibly file a legal complaint for the victims under the legislation Republic Act 7610, also known as Special Protection of Children against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act.
According to DSWD, several social workers are about to take a visit to Mindoro to meet the teenager’s parents, who are based in the province. The department wants to determine if the girl’s parents had the approval for their daughter to get into a relationship with Freddie.
Representatives of DSWD have reiterated that under the law, Freddie’s girlfriend is still a minor, Therefore, they said, she is still vulnerable to different forms of abuse. She is also not yet capable to properly discern.
