NBI Files Charges Against Vhong Navarro’s Attackers

The National Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday filed charges against the people who beat television personality Vhong Navarro last week.

The Department of Justice named Deniece Milinette Cornejo, Cedric Lee and others in the complaint which alleges serious illegal detention, a non-bailable offense, among others.

Navarro was badly beaten by a group of men inside a condominium unit inside Bonifacio Global City on January 22.

Navarro’s camp said that the actor and TV host was invited by Cornejo to her condominium unit where he was later gagged, bound, beaten, threatened and extorted money from.

Cornejo and Lee, for their part, allege that Lee caught Navarro in the act of trying to rape Cornejo and that Lee and his friends just subdued Navarro and performed a citizen’s arrest.

Navarro has denied these accusations and later also revealed that the people were asking up to P2 million from him or else they would hurt him, his family and kids.

Badly beaten, Navarro has been recuperating at a hospital and has just undergone a five-hour operation to fix his broken nose. He was at the hospital when he executed his affidavit.

In a 24 Oras report, Navarro’s lawyer, Atty. Alma Mallonga, said: “The NBI asked Vhong to confirm his statement and because he could not see very clearly. The statement that was read to him; every statement was read to him to confirm it.”

Other defendants named in the complaint are Bernice Lee, Zimmer Raz who is said to be a martial arts expert and two unknowns.

The complaint includes charges of serious physical injury, grave threat, illegal arrest and coercion. Notably absent from this list is a charge for extortion.

Navarro’s lawyer, in the 24 Oras report, also refuted Lee’s statement that other women who have allegedly fallen victim to Navarro have come in contact to them.

Mallonga said that she expects this move is being done by Lee’s camp to “disseminate” the other side of the story to the public.

However, she said: “But in the end, I am telling you, the truth is the truth. So 'yung mga sinasabi nila na nangyari, it never happened.”
