Deniece Cornejo Files Rape Case Vs Vhong NavarroDeniece Cornejo on Wednesday filed a rape case against comedian Vhong Navarro at the Taguig City Prosecutor’s Office.
The move comes after Navarro’s camp filed multiple cases including serious illegal detention against Cornejo, Cedric Lee and others involved in the mauling and alleged extortion of the actor last week.
According to Atty. Howard Calleja, Cornejo’s legal counsel, Navarro raped Cornejo as defined by Philippine law.
The rape charge is a heavier case compared to the “attempted rape” in the police blotter that was filed in connection to the alleged incident. Calleja said that based on their examination of the information given to them by Cornejo, Navarro raped her.
In an interview Tuesday night, Calleja said: “Sa aming evaluation, there was a... it was not only attempted but there is a rape. And it appears from our study and understanding of the facts that the incident constituted rape.”
By Wednesday morning, the lawyer again insisted in an interview with GMA’s Unang Balita that there was a rape during the incident.
He said that contrary to the prior definition of rape where there has to be penetration, now the condition that has to be met is for the woman’s private part to be touched by anything the offending party has.
Saying that the facts of the case are intricate and that these will be discussed in court, the lawyer also urged the public to not judge the case just yet.
He added, “bigyan ng privacy at galang 'yong babae dahil mahirap din umamin ng rape kasi reputasyon mo ang nilalaban diyan.”
Meanwhile, Navarro said in his affidavit in connection to the cases filed against Cornejo, Lee and the others that the woman performed oral sex on him the first time they met at the condominium on January 17.
However, Calleja dismissed this saying that even if that were true, this has no bearing on the rape case that they filed since the two events happened on separate days.
Calleja said that “a no is a no” and that if a person says she does not want to do something, it means she does not want to do something.
“'Pag ang babae tumanggi, wala tayong magagawa. Huwag nang ipilit. Galangin po natin ang mga kababaihan,” he said.
On the other side of the legal battle, Cornejo, Lee and other people are facing charges of serious physical injury, grave threat, illegal arrest, coercion and blackmail apart from serious illegal detention which is a non-bailable offense.
The news that Navarro, a host of the ABS-CBN show “It’s Showtime,” was mauled in a condominium at the Bonifacio Global City went viral over the weekend.
