Benjamin Alves Happy To Work With John Lloyd Cruz

Although he cannot reveal the title yet, Benjamin Alves confirmed that he will be a part of a movie that stars John Lloyd Cruz and Jessy Mendiola. He said he was thrilled to work with John Lloyd and Jessy, artists he wouldn’t have a chance to work with under normal circumstances because they belong in different networks.

It’s great to work with the actors and it was a different experience for Benjamin, too, to be included in a film directed by the highly acclaimed Chito Rono. He said he would only have a chance to work with John Lloyd and Jessy in a Cinemalaya film or a movie under a different outfit.

Benjamin is a talent of the Kapuso network while John Lloyd and Jessy are prized talents of ABS-CBN.

What was his character in the movie? The actor said he will play a part in the love triangle of John Lloyd and Jessy. His role would also be “very bad.” He already adjusted to working with both actors. He really prepared well by reading the script and anticipating what it was like to work with the two, especially John Lloyd. He also said that Direk Chito was “very precise.”

They just started shooting for the film, so he is sure he will adjust more in the future. Reports said the movie will be about a mentally-challenged person, which will be played by John Lloyd.

Aside from this project, Benjamin is also looking forward to auditioning for a Cinemalaya film next year. There’s a weekend audition that he can try on. He wants to make sure he will be a part of it next year, so he will ask GMA-7 to allow him to audition. Benjamin is interested by independent films such as “Asintado,” “Janitor” and “Hustisya.”

He lost the opportunity to work with Superstar Nora Aunor in “Hustisya.” He is quite envious of his contemporaries such as Rocco Nacino (Nora’s co-star in “Hustisya”) and Chynna Ortaleza (who has two movies for Cinemalaya). Even Direk Ricky Davao has three entries to the festival, he said.

“Nakakatuwa for them, but for me personally, nakakalungkot, because may opportunity to audition, e.” One of the great things about Cinemaya is the audition proper because it’s a win-win situation. Even if he doesn’t get the cut, Benjamin believes he will be getting a ton of knowledge from the experience itself.

As a contract artist of GMA-7, Benjamin said he feels very pampered because the roles are just offered to them. When you audition, it humbles you because you know the role is not yet in the bag. It’s a good feeling to be able to feel you’re just like everybody else, especially if you were pampered by your network and you have been getting roles a lot of talented actors did not.

What industry does he like to be a part of? Mainstream or independent? Benjamin said any of the two works for him. There are benefits and drawbacks with the two. With mainstream, there’s a big distribution.

But there’s also an advantage in doing an independent film. Because most of those in the production team are of his age, Benjamin said it’s easier to get along with them and communicate with them. He enjoys making independent movies.

There are advantages in doing both but he has only been in the industry for two years, so he’s not in a position to choose what to do or what not to do. He’ll be happy with whatever opportunity that comes his way, the actor added.

Meanwhile, Benjamin is currently starring in GMA’s afternoon soap, “Dading.” He is thankful for the wonderful feedback he has been receiving for the project that also stars Gabby Eigenmann. He said that a lot of people have been tweeting them, saying how much they appreciate the show.

It’s a wonderful feeling because the whole production and cast are really working hard for the show, Benjamin said. This is the first time Benjamin took on a role as a father, so he is really challenged to give his all into the character. At first, he had second thoughts whether or not he will accept the project because he doesn’t know how to act as a father. But he loves challenges, and he believes GMA-7 won’t be giving him this kind of role if they don’t think he can make a difference.

Benjamin said his uncle Piolo Pascual is not one of his vocal critics when it comes to acting. They talk about training for running, biking and triathlon. Piolo never interferes into his showbiz career, he said.

The actor is currently being linked to Kapuso actress Jennylyn Mercado. He and Jen will be part of the same team that will compete in the Bataan International this November. They became close because they were training for the triathlon although he hasn’t had the time lately because of taping commitments.

When asked if they usually talk to each other, Benjamin laughed and said he doesn’t want to be misunderstood. For now, his focus is on his work and his training for the triathlon.

He is thankful to GMA-7 because he never had gaps in between his projects. He believes the network is really taking care of him and giving him good roles and characters that will challenge his skills. He is also very happy with the ratings of “Dading.”

In the future, Benjamin also wants to be in leading roles. But he’s also okay if that doesn’t happen because he will still try to give his best in the projects being given to him. “And if that helps me get a project that’s a lead, it doesn’t really matter because I’m always being taken care of very well.”
