VIDEO: Eigenmann Family Releases Statement On Death Of Mark GilThe Eigenmann family released their statement on the passing of veteran actor Mark Gil on September 1. They confirmed that Mark died today, and that he has been battling cancer for two years.
Mark died at 8AM with his wife, Maricar, son Gabby, and other members of the Eigenmann clan by his side.
Michael de Mesa, who delivered the statement with his family behind him, said that Mark was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2012, but it was only in June 2014 that he confirmed it was terminal.
The actor, known for his portrayal as Sid Lucero in "Batch '81," asked his family not to reveal to the public about his condition. He also chose not to stay in the hospital, and enjoyed his remaining days with his family.
"To those who have asked us about his condition, especially his colleagues, the press and fans, we apologize for not being forthright, but we also ask for understanding."
Michael said Mark spent his remaining days in high spirit, in comfort and in no pain. He enjoyed the presence of his entire family, he added.
The statement asked the public to allow the family to grieve in private. They said to remember Mark, known to his friends and family as Ralph, as a father, son, brother and grandfather.
"For the outpouring of love for Ralph that we’ve received on his behalf, we thank you." Michael, who sat beside sister Cherie, Mark's wife Maricar and parents Eddie Mesa and Rosemarie Gil, quoted a line from "Batch '81."
"'Sa simula’t katapusan ay kapatiran.'"
The Eigenmann family revealed that a memorial service will be held for Mark on Wednesday, 10AM, at La Salle Greenhills Chapel.
Mark's remains were cremated immediately after his death.
Hours before the statement was released, Gabby posted a photo of him and his father on his Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts. He was beside Mark when he died.
Gabby said that his father held his hand close to his heart. He also whispered his last "I love you" to his dad. He thanked Mark for all that he has done for him and the family, as well as the legacy he left behind.
Mark's parents, Eddie and Rosemarie, went home from the United States because of their son's condition. His daughter, Ira, also arrived from the US. Ira and Gabby are Mark's children with Irene Celebre.
Michael arrived early morning of Monday from the US. He was able to see Mark shortly before the latter passed away at 8AM.
Sid Lucero, who took on his father's name from "Batch '81," was in Singapore when Mark passed away. Before he left, he told his father that he has to leave for the GMA-7 show, "My Destiny."
Reports said Sid was in tears upon learning of his father's death. GMA-7 is arranging his arrival from Singapore. Sid and Maxene are Mark's children with Bing Pineda.
Mark also has a daughter with Jaclyn Jose, Kapamilya actress Andi Eigenmann.
One of Mark's wishes is for his memorial to be at the La Salle Greenhills, his alma mater.
