Joey Marquez Loses On Bid To Return To PoliticsComedian and TV host Joey Marquez has again lost in his bid to return to local politics. He failed to win in his candidacy to be a representative of the second district of Parañaque City in the recently concluded elections.
In the afternoon of May 14, Commission of Elections has proclaimed United Nationalist Alliance’s (UNA) bet Gus Tambunting as the winning congressman in the district. He beat Marquez by several thousand votes. The proclamation was held at the San Antonio Sports Complex within the city.
Marquez served as the city’s vice mayor from 1992 to 1995. He was elected mayor after that and completed his term from 1995 to 2004. He went into a political hiatus from 2004 to 2010 and concentrated on his TV and hosting career for some time.
His first attempt to return to Parañaque politics in 2010 failed. He ran for the mayoralty post but lost. His latest bid as a house representative served as his second failed attempt to get back on his political feet.
Kris Aquino factor
It can be recalled that Marquez’s popularity significantly dwindled when he figured in a controversial breakup in September 2003 with Kris Aquino, now presidential sister. That split up became so huge that it braced the headlines for many days.
Marquez and Aquino lived in a house for a while. Immediately after their breakup, Aquino declared on national TV that she was physically beaten by Marquez. But that no one thought that time that Aquino would publicly declare having contracted STD (chlamydia) from Marquez.
Days after, the Aquino clan showed their public support towards Kris. For his part, Marquez aired a public apology and said in public that Aquino is not a liar. That was short of directly admitting that everything Aquino confessed to the public about their split up was accurate and truthful.
It was logical that the controversy prompted Marquez to lie low in his political career since then. He did not seek any public post in the 2004 and 2007 elections. Meanwhile, Aquino met James Yap and married him in 2005. The two separated and filed for annulment in 2011.
On the other hand, Marquez’s former wife Alma Moreno, now Alma Moreno-Salic, continued her winning streak in the local polls. She won was a re-electionist councilor in the first district of the city. The former sexy actress is currently the president of league of councilors in the country.
Moreno originally intended to run as a senator in the 2013 elections. As early as 2012, she had been vocal in her ambition. However, by the end of last year, she changed her mind and backed out from her intentions to join the senatorial race. Instead, she decided to seek re-election. Moreno was not the only celebrity who won in the city. Jason Webb, Ryan Yllana, and Roselle Nava also gained victory in their respective bids to be Parañaque councilors.
