Jessica Soho On Vice Ganda Concert Joke: ‘Rape Is Not A Joke’

Jessica Soho has voiced her side following Vice Ganda making a joke about her involving rape.

Soho, the current GMA Vice President for News and Public Affairs, sent her statement via text message to Philippine Entertainment Portal Editor In Chief Jo-Ann Maglipon saying that rape should not be the subject of a joke.

“Rape is not a joke and should never be material for a comedy concert,” Soho said.

She also expressed gratitude to all who have voiced their support for her regarding this issue. Nonetheless, she said that this issue should not be about her.

“This should not be about me but about rape victims who suffer tremendously from this terrible crime,” she said.

“The horrors they go through are unspeakable and should never be taken lightly, especially by way of a cruel joke,” she added.

Recently, Vice Ganda earned the ire of personalities including Arnold Clavio and several reporters from GMA Network.

Clavio and various GMA Network reporters have criticized Vice Ganda for what they say is a tasteless joke made by the comedian about Jessica Soho.

In his latest concert held at the Araneta Coliseum on May 17, Vice Ganda joked about Jessica Soho, her weight and about rape.

In one segment of the concert, Vice Ganda named several personalities on television and wondered what would happen if they became “bold stars”.

Vice Ganda started by saying that if Jessica Soho would weigh herself, the scale would say one person at a time repeatedly.

However, what earned the ire of Arnold Clavio and several reporters from GMA was Vice Ganda’s joke that if Jessica Soho was a bold star and she would have a rape scene, it would always need to be a “gang rape”.

The comedian also said that the rapists would comment “Ipasok ang lechon!” and then Soho would ask “Nasaan ang apple”, a reference to the popular Nestea Ice Tea commercial featuring the famous native Filipino dish of whole roast pork.

This morning, May 28, Clavio in his show on DZBB voiced his disdain toward the jokes made by Vice Ganda.

“Papatulan ko na siya kasi pag di natin siya sinita, hindi natin alam sino pa’ng isusunod niyang bibiktimahin,” Clavio started. “Si Nancy Binay noon, tapos si Jessica Soho.”

“Bakit mo binibiktima ang mga taong seryoso sa trabaho nila? Huwag mo silang kasangkapanin para lang makapagpatawa,” Clavio added.

He also questioned why Vice Ganda does not subject people in his own network to his jokes.

“Bakit hindi taga-diyan sa inyo ang gawin mong subject ng jokes mo? Baki hindi taga-ABS?” Clavio said.

It should be noted, however, that Vice Ganda also mentioned Kapamilya personalities in his Vice Ganda XXX segment including Kris Aquino, Boy Abunda, Kim Atienza and Gus Abelgas.

Meanwhile, other GMA personalities have expressed their views about the jokes Vice Ganda made.

Taking to twitter, Jiggy Manicad (@jiggymanicad) said: “@vicegandako Para sa iyo Vice Ganda I hope you got my message loud and clear.”

“At para mas maintindihan mo Vice Ganda, ipapakilala kita sa ilang biktima para maramdaman mo ang trauma nila. Bad joke bro.Pls retweet,” the acclaimed reporter said in another tweet.

“Para kay Vice Ganda, personal ko ito. Hindi joke ang salitang "rape." Pakiretweet po hanggang makaabot sa kanya,” Manicad said in another tweet.

“Rape is not a joke. It's not funny. It's violence vs women. It's a dark day when rape joke is made in a coliseum full of people,” said Maki Pulido (@makipulido) in a tweet.

“Vice ganda should realize that rape is not a joke. That rape is a form of violence. Pls RT hanggang umabot sa kanya,” she said.

Mark Salazar (@MarkSalazarGMA7) said “@jkballentes @makipulido kaya nirerespeto ko si dolphy, naging legend sya nang hindi namamahiya ng kapwa tao. Yun ang henyong komedyante.”

Vice Ganda is yet to voice his reaction to the criticisms.
