Vice Ganda Cites Depression For Going AWOL At ‘It’s Showtime’Believe it or not, Vice Ganda is claiming that he has recently encountered a bout of depression. In the May 28 live telecast of ABS-CBN’s ‘It’s Showtime,’ the gay comedian took the time to apologize to the staff, his bosses, and the audience for not showing up for several days in the show.
After the opening number in the noontime show, an emotional Vice Ganda suddenly gave a serious speech. He directly addressed almost all the top executives of the network because he had not reported for work in the last few days without any leave permission. He disclosed how he missed everyone he is working with in his TV shows.
In the same speech, Vice Ganda revealed that he faced depression in the past days. This came despite the recent success of his major concert ‘I-Vice Ganda Mo Ako,’ held last May 17 at the Aranetal Coliseum. The controversial comedian said he woke up one day feeling alone and sad because he could not dedicate his successful career to anyone else. That was when he turned back to his family.
Alone and sad
The emotional Vice Ganda reiterated that he almost forgot about his family at the height of his success. That realization prompted him to go back to his home town in La Union to visit his grandpa. He recalled that he promised his granddad in March 31 after his (Vice Ganda) birthday that he would pick up and take his lolo out of town.
But that promise was unfulfilled until he realized in May 18 after his concert that he was losing time for his family. He even revealed that his grandpa was so excited then to welcome him. The old man even had several batches of mangoes picked for his grandson, but all those fruits withered and the gay comedian did not show up. His granddad felt disappointed and submitted to the thought that he would not come to fulfill his promise.
When he visited his granddad last week, Vice Ganda said he immediately booked flights to Boracay for the next day. He took his family in a surprise and sudden vacation trip to the island. He said his granddad has always longed to someday visit the famous tourism island. To Vice Ganda, it was all worth it. He said he is now alright and is again ready to face his crowd.
Issue with Jessica Soho
Vice Ganda has remained mum about his latest issue with GMA-7 top news anchor Jessica Soho. Earlier this week, the comedian has been gathering flaks in various online social media sites for his insensitive joke about being gang raped, which he directed at the Kapuso newscaster.
The comedian also made fun of Soho’s weight before he uttered his ‘rape’ joke. To this, Soho made a statement that she does not mind the joke about her physique but she was concerned about how a serious crime like rape was used in a ‘cruel joke.’ Soho said that spiel took rape lightly and almost made fun of it. She was bothered about how the thousands of rape victims would feel about people making fun of their painful ordeal.
It is not clear if Vice Ganda would issue a response. The gay standup comedian has been in the news recently for openly ridiculing senator-elect Nancy Binay, who was also not spared from his comedy materials in the same concert. Meanwhile, many news reporters from the Kapuso network have expressed their support for Soho and for all the rape victims who fell prey to Vice Ganda’s vicious jokes. Will this re-ignite another network war? We’ll never know for now.
