ABS-CBN Cancels Julia Barretto's "Cofradia"ABS-CBN decided it will not push through with "Cofradia," which was supposed to be Star Magic's Julia Barretto's launching teleserye. Instead, a replacement show will be conceptualized for the young actress.
According to reports, the Kapamilya network decided to cancel the project because of numerous comments from netizens that the teleserye will be verging towards racism. It might send a message that real beauty can only be found in people with fair complexion.
Netizens are concerned the show might affect the values of dark-skinned young ladies. "Cofradia," a novel by Dominador Ad Castillo, was first starred in by veteran actress Gloria Romero in 1953.
Gina Alajar made a remake of the movie in 1973. Both films were a success in the box office.
"Cofradia" tells a story of a girl who is afraid to love or even mingle with people because of her dark complexion. All that will change, however, when she got hold of a magic candle that will turn her into a fair-skinned lady.
ABS-CBN is set to hold a story conference for Barretto's new show on July 7.
