This Is Why Ryan Agoncillo Chose Gma Over Tv5 And Abs Cbn
According to the actor, there were multiple reasons why he went to GMA despite getting offers from TV5 and ABS-CBN.
Agoncillo is hosting GMA’s newest game show “Picture! Picture!” which will start airing this Saturday and which has been called by the host as his first “proper” game show.
In an interview published by The Philippine Entertainment Portal, Agoncillo traced how he came to be a Kapuso again.
We say again because the host actually got to start his career with GMA, in the News and Public Affairs division of the network, when he became a host of “Mornings @ GMA” in 1998 and “Unang Hirit” in 1999.
Based on his comments, Agoncillo feels as if this is a homecoming of sorts. “It’s my first time to be back in GMA for a long time,” he said.
He recalled that the network’s tagline when he used to be with GMA was still “Where you belong.”
Meanwhile, Agoncillo revealed that “Picture! Picture!” was offered to him way before “Talentadong Pinoy” ended this August.
However, out respect for the show, he chose not to accept it then. “We wanted to focus and finish that show with a bang,” he said.
Agoncillo also said that the start of his new game show was postponed because he got dengue which delayed the negotiations with GMA.
Not that TV5 did not offer him a new show. Agoncillo revealed that once his contract ended in August, he was “right away” met by TV5 entertainment division boss Wilma Galvante for a formal offer for “Let’s Ask Pilipinas,” the TV5 game show currently hosted by Aga Muhlach.
According to Agoncillo, he and his team studied the offer and out of respect for “Eat Bulaga!” which he has been a part of five years, he chose not to helm the new game show. The host said that the legendary GMA noontime show has “shown its loyalty to me” and that “ako rin, yung kapit ko sa dabarkads, medyo matindi na.”
He added that “in deference ko dun kaya di ko tinanggap ang Let’s Ask Pilipinas.”
Next, Agoncillo said that ABS-CBN also had an offer for him. Without revealing what it was, he said, “then, yun na, mayroon din offer from ABS-CBN, meron din offer from GMA.”
That offer from GMA was a reiteration of the network’s interest in getting him to host “Picture! Picture!”
The host said he chose the Kapuso show because “natuwa ako sa konsepto.”
Nonetheless, Agoncillo stressed that he is not an exclusive GMA artist at the moment.
This is not because he does not want to be an exclusive Kapuso, he says that he just chose to be a host and a family man first before anything else.
“Kasi ganito ‘yan. First and foremost, I’m a host. Next, I’m a father. Nagda-dabble tayo sa pag-aartista,” he explained in the interview.
According to him, if he signed as an exclusive Kapuso artist, there would be certain demands that will come with the contract.
He said that on one hand, it feels great to have a full schedule – and consequently, a full bank account – but at this point in his life, he chose his family.
“Ayoko na in the end, ‘Ay naku! Nag-iinarte ‘to! Kaya ganito, kesyo ganyan’,” he explained.
One of those demands would be to do a soap opera. He said he would love to do a soap but because of the demands which he says he would need to respect if he signed to do a project like this, “That’s why I chose na, ‘Teka muna, isa-isa muna, para walang expectations. Lahat fulfilled. Para di tayo nagkakasukatan in the end.’”
It also appears that he has the support of his wife Judy Ann Santos in his decision to choose the Kapuso network and not sign as an exclusive talent.
Agoncillo says he is lucky to have a wife who understands and thinks the same way as him.
“We want to provide for our family really well, but we want to be with the family that you provide for. So, this time, I choose family,” he said.
It’s pretty ironic that he’s saying he chose “family” by not choosing to be a “Kapamilya,” isn’t it?
Meanwhile, another reason which may have persuaded Agoncillo to go to GMA was the possibility that he would join “Unang Hirit” again.
According to him, GMA has a lot of plans for him and one of those is that he return to “news and public affairs”. It’s just because of time constraints that he is taking one step at a time, he said.
Agoncillo said that the plan to go back to news is “one thing that excited me also.”
In fact, he wants these plans to push through because he said that this is where he started.
“Nineteen years old ako nung una akong tumira ng Unang Hirit. Ngayon, kung babalik ako sa Unang Hirit, or I get a chance to do News and Public Affairs, I think I will bring in a different perspective,” he said.
He noted that this is “what excites me being a Kapuso.”
Furthermore, Agoncillo said that the thought of him and wife Judy Ann will have back to back shows on different networks which will have several minutes overlap on the air.
“If it's not the first time, it’s one of the rare times na ang mag-asawa, magkasama sa telebisyon in any part of the world,” he said.
According to him, there wouldn’t be any conflict with him and his wife as they are both adults and know that they are just working.
“I kinda like it. Nagbabatian kami sa show. I watch her show, and I bet you she's gonna watch this,” he said.
If there’s any conflict, it’s with their daughter Yohan who is already 9 years old.
According to Agoncillo, his daughter asked him if there wasn’t any way he could move his show to Sunday.
“I don’t want to buy two TVs,” Yohan said, according to his dad.
