"Maleficent" Grosses P179.9 Million In Five Days In PH Box Office

Disney's "Maleficent" earns P179.9 million in Philippine box office in five days. That was the period of May 28 to June 1.

This was according to the local office of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International, which is the film's distributor.

"Maleficent's" opening gross is the second best this year, falling only behind April's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (P251 million) but definitely higher than "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" (P175 million), which bowed down last week.

This Disney film also bested the biggest opening weekend of Angelina Jolie's films such as "Salt" (P131 million), "Wanted" (P95 million) and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" (P83 million).

Abroad, "Maleficent" also earned enough for it to rule weekend box office. It grossed $70 million in the US and $100.6 million internationally.

The film's US earnings over the weekend beat Angelina's domestic records for "Kung Fu Panda" ($60.2 million), "Wanted" ($50.9 million) and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" ($50.3 million).

Here in the Philippines, "Maleficent" brought the house down in 264 cinemas (8 IMAX) in 122 locations. SM North Edsa received the largest share with P8.41 million, followed by SM Mall of Asia (P8.29 million), SM Megamall (P8.06 million), SM Cebu (P7.09 million) and Trinoma (P6.19 million).

On the other hand, Ayala Cinemas also posted impressive earnings: Glorietta 4 (P4.74 million), Ayala Cebu (P4.07 million), Bonifacio High Street (P4.03 million), SM Aura (P3.47 million) and Alabang Town Center (P3.39 million).

Other cinemas are Newport City (P3.33 million), Eastwood (P3.05 million), SM Southmall (P2.97 million), Power Plant (P2.96 million), Greenbelt 3 (P2.85 million), Greenhills Promenade (P2.82 million), SM Fairview (P2.57 million), Gateway (P2.56 million), SM Clark (P2.49 million) and Market! Market! (P2.48 million).

"Maleficent" is the untold story of the villain from Disney's "Sleeping Beauty." It follows how she turned from a pure-hearted woman to a witch.

Maleficent (Angelina) was driven by revenge and a desire to protect the area over which she rules. She put a spell on the king's daughter, Aurora, who got confused between the forest kingdom and the human kingdom when she woke up.

Maleficent then realized that Aurora holds the key to the peace that can bring the two worlds together.

The film stars Angelina, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.
