GMA-7'S "Camera Juan: Pelikulang Binuo Ng Mamamayan" Airs On April 21

GMA News and Public Affairs will present on April 21 (Sunday) at 10 pm its groundbreaking election project entitled "Camera Juan: Pelikulang Binuo ng Mamamayan."

Instead of the usual documentary about elections, this film will present the topic from the perspective of the ordinary Filipino.

It hopes to highlight the importance of an empowered and watchful citizenry.

The film is made up of various contributions from ordinary Filipinos. It has all the elements of an election campaign period or the election day itself--wrongdoings, social struggles and even modern-day heroism.

These are the things the ordinary Juan Dela Cruz witnesses everyday.

Clyde Mercado, assistant vice president of public affairs, said they were first apprehensive when they started the project because they may not have enough contributions.

“We are pleased to share, however, that since our initial call-out, we already received hundreds of video contributions from all over the Philippines and even from our countrymen overseas.”

Cannes award-winning director Brillante Mendoza was tapped by GMA to compile these video submissions and present them in a more visually appealing manner.

“It’s my first time to direct a project like this. What I like about it is the approach, the involvement of ordinary people. That’s what you’ll see in this film – ordinary Filipinos telling their stories. The objective from the beginning was to empower them. What we did was to supplement visuals to the stories they sent and then weave these stories into one collective film,” Mendoza said.

The film focuses on the Philippines' pressing problems like poverty, child labor, education and health.

Mendoza said as a filmmaker, he has to fully understand the messages of the videos. To make the film, the director went to far-flung areas of the Philippines and see for himself the situations presented in the video.

"Sana ang maliit at simple naming paraan sa paglalahad ng mga bagay na ito ay mabigyan din ng pansin ng mga susunod na mamumuno."

"Camera Juan" is a product of the same team that produced "Oras Na" and "Planet Philippines."

GMA Network hopes Filipinos can be more vigilant and learned about the people they are going to vote for.

"This is what 'Camera Juan' is all about—showing Filipinos that we all can take an active role in building the nation, especially since the elections are just around the corner,” Angeli Atienza, program manager, said.

The film will be presented by Jessica Soho. It will air on April 21 on GMA's Sunday Night Box Office.
