The recent Kanlaon Volcano eruption has brought challenges to the residents of La Castellana in Negros Occidental. The eruption on June 3 has caused dangerous lahar flows exacerbated by subsequent heavy rains.
Following the Kanlaon Volcano eruption, La Castellana was placed under calamity. The eruption deposited ash fragments, which were washed away by intense rains, especially in the southern part of the volcano. This resulted in a cement-like lahar flow, flooding the streets and transforming the water of Baji-Baji into a grayish town.
Mari Andylene Quintia, a resident volcanologist from the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory, explained the situation: “The ash fragments that were deposited during the eruption last June 3 have already settled at the volcano’s flank. Then the strong rainfall, especially at the southern part of the volcano, washed out those deposits.”
The lahar flow has significantly affected the local community. The Kanlaon Volcano eruption has affected 8 barangays in La Castellana, prompting the evacuation of at least 200 residents to emergency shelters. The immediate needs of these evacuees are critical, with water supply being the most urgent. “As of now, they need water. That’s very urgent. And we have already requested that and even for possible deployment of mobile water filtration,” said Raul Fernandez, the Office of Civil Defense VI Regional Director.
Authorities have advised residents not to return to their homes until the situation stabilizes and they receive further updates on the volcano’s activity. The local government closely monitors Kanlaon’s behavior, as further eruptions or rain-induced lahar flows could pose additional risks.
