Netflix Philippines enters the spotlight with its first original zombie film, Outside. Directed by Carlo Ledesma, this thriller isn’t just about the undead—it’s a gripping exploration of family trauma. Starring Sid Lucero and Beauty Gonzalez, Outside delves into how generational trauma can be as destructive as the zombie outbreak itself.
A Family’s Fight for Survival
Lucero takes on the role of Francis, a father seeking refuge at his childhood farm with his wife Iris (Gonzalez) and their two sons. They flee the zombie apocalypse, hoping for safety in the countryside. But survival isn’t just about escaping zombies; adjusting to rural life brings its own struggles. As Francis battles the horrors of the present, he is haunted by the dark memories of his past, tied to the very house they now inhabit.
Iris, ever the optimist, pushes for the family to move further north in search of other survivors. Francis, however, stands firm, believing the farm is their best chance of survival. This decision fuels tension between the couple, highlighting how trauma can fracture relationships even in dire times.
At its core, Outside focuses on Francis’ internal battle with the trauma passed down from his father (played by Joel Torre). This emotional burden affects his interactions with Iris and their eldest son Joshua, portrayed by Marco Masa. The complex family dynamics add depth to the film, making it much more than a typical zombie story. It’s a tale about survival—both physical and emotional.
Stunning Visuals and Direction
Visually, Outside captivates with its stunning cinematography. Shot in the scenic Negros Occidental, the film beautifully captures the eerie isolation of the characters’ environment. Ledesma and cinematographer Shing-Fung Cheung use long takes and wide shots to heighten the tension, immersing viewers in the desolation that surrounds the family.
Ledesma’s choice to incorporate extended takes—despite weather challenges—enhances the film’s sense of dread. The result is a haunting atmosphere that amplifies both the zombie threat and the characters’ personal struggles.
One of Outside’s standout elements is its unique portrayal of zombies. Ledesma adds a touch of humanity to the creatures, setting them apart from the mindless monsters typically seen in the genre. The makeup and costumes, designed and worn by locals, add to the film’s authenticity and bring a fresh take on the undead.
While Outside excels in many areas, its 142-minute runtime feels unnecessarily long. A shorter two-hour version could have made the story even more impactful without losing its essence. Although trimming some characters’ screen time, such as Enchong Dee’s, would have been required, the film’s core themes would remain intact.
A Standout Filipino Zombie Thriller
Outside sets a new standard for Filipino zombie films. Combining themes of trauma and survival with striking visuals, it goes beyond the usual horror flick. While the zombies keep you on edge, it’s the family’s emotional journey that leaves a lasting impression.
With its unique take on the genre, Outside is a win for Netflix Philippines and a must-watch for anyone looking for a deeper, more thoughtful zombie thriller.
