Renowned Filipino director Mikhail Red is stepping outside his comfort zone with his latest film, Friendly Fire. Known for his gritty crime thrillers and horror movies, Red is venturing into the world of esports with a wholesome, family-friendly tale.

Friendly Fire follows the story of Hazel, a talented new player who dreams of representing the Philippines in an international esports tournament. With the help of a struggling internet cafe, Hazel’s streaming career takes off, and she soon finds herself in the spotlight. The film features the Filipino-made game Project Xandata, showcasing local game development talent.

Red admits that the film is a departure from his usual fare. “It’s a very different genre for me,” he says. “It’s almost like a 1980s sports underdog film, but set in the world of esports.” The director is excited to share this new side of his filmmaking with audiences.

Despite the shift in genre, Red’s signature style is still evident in Friendly Fire. The film is visually stunning, with dynamic action sequences and captivating cinematography. The characters are well-developed, and the story is both heartwarming and inspiring.

Red’s passion for filmmaking is evident in his work. He started directing shorts at the young age of 15 and released his first feature film, Rekorder, at 21. The film won him the best new director award at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2014.

Surviving as a filmmaker in the Philippines can be challenging, but Red has persevered. He has become one of the country’s most respected directors, with a reputation for producing high-quality films.
