K-pop star Taeyang closed his “The Light Year” tour in Manila with a heartfelt performance that left fans in awe. The SM Mall of Asia Arena hosted the final stop on February 22, where Taeyang performed a mix of his solo hits and Big Bang classics.
One of the biggest surprises of the night was when Taeyang sang “Palagi” by Filipino artist TJ Monterde.
Before performing “Palagi,” Taeyang addressed the crowd.
“The next one is a special gift for Manila. This is my first time singing a Filipino song. I really like this song,” he said.
Fans erupted in cheers as Taeyang delivered the song with clear pronunciation and deep emotion. Afterward, the audience chanted “isa pa” (one more time), and Taeyang gladly obliged.
Originally released in 2023, “Palagi” became a massive hit in the Philippines. The song ranked in YouTube’s top 10 trending music videos in 2024 and won Top Local Song of the Year at the Official Philippines Chart under the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Furthermore, “Palagi” has gathered 180 million streams on Spotify and 22 million views on YouTube.
Taeyang’s Manila setlist featured a mix of Big Bang classics and solo tracks. The night started with “Prayer” and continued with hits like “I’ll Be There,” “Vibe,” “1 AM,” and “Stay with Me.” Fans also enjoyed performances of “Wedding Dress,” “Bang Bang Bang,” “Eyes, Nose, Lips,” and “Ringa Linga.”
For the encore, Taeyang performed “Superstar,” “Body,” and “Nightfall.”
Shortly after the show, Taeyang shared his gratitude on Instagram, writing, “Thank u Manila. Love u palagi.”
TJ Monterde expressed his appreciation after seeing Taeyang’s performance. He reposted the video on X (formerly Twitter) with a shocked emoji and commented on Taeyang’s Instagram post, writing, “Thank you for singing ‘Palagi’! Love from the Philippines!”
This is not the first time a South Korean artist has covered “Palagi.” In 2024, singer-songwriter 10cm (Kwon Jung-yeol) praised Monterde’s work and expressed interest in collaborating with Filipino artists like Zack Tabudlo and TJ Monterde.
During his Manila concert, 10cm mentioned his admiration for “Palagi” and how fortunate he was to connect with Monterde.
Taeyang’s performance of “Palagi” marks another significant moment in the growing connection between K-pop and Filipino music, proving that OPM continues to reach international audiences.
