A fitting tribute to the iconic Filipino actor, Fernando Poe Jr., was unveiled in Batangas on his 85th birth anniversary. The bronze statue, now standing tall at the FPJ sports arena in San Jose town, serves as a lasting tribute. It honors his significant contributions to Philippine cinema and his unwavering dedication to public service.
The unveiling ceremony was led by Senator Grace Poe, FPJ’s daughter, and her son, Brian Poe Llamanzares, chairperson of the Panday Bayanihan Foundation. Senator Poe expressed her gratitude to the local government and Batangas residents for providing a special place for the statue.
“This statue is a physical symbol of FPJ’s enduring presence in our lives,” Senator Poe said. “It’s a constant reminder of his inspiration and his dedication to helping others. We hope it will continue to inspire future generations to follow his example of compassion and public service.”
The bronze statue captures FPJ in his signature denim attire and classic pompadour hairstyle. Notably, his hand rests on a holster, symbolizing his readiness to assist those in need. This detail reflects FPJ’s reputation as a champion of the marginalized and his unwavering support for social causes.
The statue was crafted by renowned sculptor Jordan Mendoza of Pasig City and stands proudly on an elevated platform bearing FPJ’s name and the inscription “National Artist, 1939-2004.”
Preserving the Legacy
Senator Poe emphasized the importance of preserving her father’s legacy of generosity and compassion. She recalled how his values guided her throughout her public service career, from her time as MTRCB chairperson to her current role as a senator.
As her term nears its end, Senator Poe hopes the laws she authored will inspire future public servants. These laws aim to provide nutritious meals for children and improve the lives of Filipino farmers.
“We must always strive to uphold our family name as a testament to the values we hold dear,” Senator Poe said. “FPJ Panday Bayanihan Foundation will continue its mission to carry on his legacy and make a positive impact on the lives of our fellow Filipinos.”
