Dennis Trillo Discusses “Green Bones” and His Thoughts on PDLs

Dennis Trillo, star of the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry Green Bones, shared his insights on his role and perspective on persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) during a recent interview. The film marks his return to the MMFF. It tells the gripping story of Domingo Zamora, a soon-to-be-released prisoner who faces new obstacles. Dennis plays Domingo, a man imprisoned for his sister’s murder. Ruru Madrid portrays Xavier Gonzaga, a prison guard blocking his freedom.

Green Bones explores the concept that finding “green bones” in a person’s remains is a sign of their goodness in life. Dennis explained that this intriguing belief plays a significant role in the movie’s narrative. His character, Domingo, is a former criminal who seems to have changed, but the guard, Xavier, remains suspicious of him. The tension between the two characters grows as Xavier insists on keeping Domingo behind bars, despite his good behavior and inmate support.

Dennis talked about the preparation for his role, which included learning Filipino Sign Language and losing weight. His character’s transformation is important to the story. Dennis felt that adopting these changes would help him fully embody Domingo’s struggle. The actor also revealed that, despite working with Ruru for the first time, they did not bond much on set. Dennis explained that their characters are cold towards each other. This separation helped them maintain the necessary dynamics for their roles.

Directed by Zig Dulay, known for his work on Firefly and Maria Clara at Ibarra, Green Bones is a powerful story about justice, redemption, and personal transformation. Dennis also shared his thoughts on PDLs, acknowledging the challenges they face. Moreover, he emphasized how the film sheds light on their struggles, particularly for those who are trying to turn their lives around.
