Enrique Gil is stepping into uncharted territory in his career, embracing fresh challenges while remaining open to familiar collaborations. Known for his past work in iconic love teams, Gil clarified he’s not closing the door on reuniting with Kathryn Bernardo, his co-star from the 2012 hit series Princess and I. Although rumors of a project with Bernardo have circulated, the actor emphasized that no such collaboration is currently in development.
“I haven’t heard about that,” he shared during the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Gabi ng Parangal. “But I’m always open to anything.”
Currently, Gil headlines Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital, a found-footage horror film featuring Jane de Leon, Alexa Miro, and MJ Lastimosa. The project demonstrates his growing interest in expanding his repertoire beyond acting. Earlier this year, he debuted as a producer with I Am Not Big Bird, a slapstick comedy that premiered on Valentine’s Day.
“This is just the beginning,” Gil said. “I’ve always wanted to explore comedy, and now I’m producing horror. I also have ideas for action-horror projects in the future.”
Despite his pivot toward solo projects and production through his company, Immerse Entertainment, Gil insists he hasn’t bid farewell to love teams. “I’ve done it all my life,” he noted. “Right now, I want to focus on genres I’ve never tried before. There’s a time and place for everything.”
In addition to his MMFF entry, Gil revealed he’s working on a new ABS-CBN series that he co-produced and conceptualized. Set to film in Europe next year, the project marks another milestone in his creative journey.
“I pitched the concept to ABS-CBN, and I’m thrilled it was approved,” he shared.
As he continues to experiment with genres and styles, Gil remains focused on honing his storytelling skills. “I’m just having fun with different ideas and characters. Comedy and horror are my favorites, but I want to explore dramas and action too.”
With multiple projects lined up and a fresh outlook on his craft, Gil is carving a new path in Philippine cinema while staying true to his roots.
