Actress-singer Maris Racal made a striking entrance at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale). She represented her film, “Sunshine”, directed by Antoinette Jadaone, in the Generation 14plus Competition.
A Dress with Cultural Symbolism
For the Berlinale red carpet, Racal wore a lime green chiffon dress by Filipino designer Jot Losa. The highlight of the gown was a silk sampaguita garland, a nod to Filipino heritage.
Losa described the dress as “a flowing silhouette in a delicate hue, reminiscent of spring’s softest bloom.” The silk sampaguita flowers framed the neckline, blending tradition with modern fashion.
A Significant Festival Appearance
Racal missed the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of “Sunshine” due to filming commitments. Berlinale became her first opportunity to promote the film internationally.
The festival opened with the screening of “Das Licht (The Light)” on February 13. Racal attended the event, making a statement with her culturally inspired gown.
The Story of Sunshine
The film follows Sunshine, a young rhythmic gymnast who aspires to join the national team. Days before her tryout, she discovers she is pregnant. While seeking an abortion, she meets a girl who eerily resembles her.
Aside from addressing teen pregnancy and abortion, Sunshine explores the struggles of Filipino athletes aiming for global competitions.
A Strong Cast and Direction
The film stars Elijah Canlas, Xyriel Manabat, Jennica Garcia, Annika Co, and Meryll Soriano. This marks Racal’s third collaboration with Tonet Jadaone, following the shows “The Kangks Show” and “Simula Sa Gitna.”
Jadaone, known for her Metro Manila Film Festival-winning film “Fan Girl,” is bringing Sunshine to more international film festivals before its Philippine release.
Looking Ahead
In an interview before her trip, Racal shared her excitement about the festival. “I know this will open a lot of new perspectives for me,” she said. With Sunshine gaining recognition, Racal continues to make her mark on the global stage.
