Nikki Valdez is set to return to the theater stage after 15 years, stepping into the spotlight as Diana Goodman in the Philippine production of the Tony Award-winning musical “Next to Normal.” The production is scheduled to open in February 2025. Moreover, Valdez will alternate in the lead role with Sheila Valderrama, an acclaimed theater actress known for her performances in “Once on This Island,” “Rama Hari,” and “Passion.”
“Next to Normal” is a poignant exploration of family, mental health, and resilience. Valdez’s character, Diana, is a mother navigating the complexities of bipolar disorder and its effects on her family. The musical debuted on Broadway in 2009, earning widespread acclaim for its raw and relatable storytelling.
Valdez’s last theater role was in “The Wedding Singer” in 2010. Since then, she has excelled in film, particularly in the “Ang Tanging Ina” series and “Enteng ng Ina Mo.” Her performance in the 2022 Metro Manila Film Festival entry “Family Matters” earned her the FAMAS Best Supporting Actress award. Thus, further cementing her status as a versatile artist.
The star-studded cast of “Next to Normal” also includes OJ Mariano and Floyd Tena, who will alternate as Dan Goodman, Diana’s steadfast husband. Sheena Belarmino and Jam Binay will portray Natalie Goodman, Diana’s determined daughter. Meanwhile, Vino Mabalot and Benedix Ramos will take on the role of Gabe Goodman, the enigmatic son. Omar Uddin and Davy Narciso will share the role of Henry, Natalie’s love interest, with Jef Flores appearing as Dr. Madden, Diana’s psychiatrist.
The production is helmed by Toff de Venecia, Sandbox’s managing artistic director, with Ejay Yatco as musical director. Additionally, Tom Kitt’s music and Brian Yorkey’s book and lyrics promise an emotionally rich experience.
Valdez’s return marks an exciting chapter in her career. Therefore, promising audiences a heartfelt performance that brings depth and authenticity to the challenges and triumphs of Diana Goodman’s story. “Next to Normal” remains a testament to the power of theater in shedding light on complex human experiences.
