Maris Racal “Sunshine” Brings PH Cinema to Toronto

Maris Racal’s star is set to shine even brighter as her latest film, Sunshine, takes center stage at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film, directed by Antoinette Jadaone, will be featured in TIFF’s Centrepiece section. This inclusion is a significant milestone for Philippine cinema, positioning it alongside global cinematic masterpieces.

With 43 films by directors from 41 different countries—Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Nigeria, Panama, the Philippines, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, and the USA—TIFF presented its 2024 Centerpiece program roster.

The Filipina filmmaker rushed to social media to celebrate the news. “It’s out!!! SUNSHINE will have its world premiere at TIFF (Centrepiece section) [tear emojis] sorry na ma, first-time ko (I’m sorry, mother, it’s my first time) [red heart emojis] thank you to everyone who helped me develop and make this [heart sign emojis],” Jadaone wrote in her caption. 

Sunshine tells the gripping story of a young gymnast, portrayed by Racal. Her promising athletic career takes a dramatic turn when she unexpectedly becomes pregnant. As she navigates this life-altering situation, the film delves into profound social issues with raw honesty and empathy. This marks Racal and Jadaone’s third cinematic collaboration. Consequently, their continued partnership promises to deliver yet another powerful and thought-provoking work.
