The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) will showcase a thought-provoking entry this year with Topakk (English title: Triggered). This film delves into the often-overlooked topic of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Directed by Richard V. Somes, Topakk stars Arjo Atayde and Julia Montes. Through a gripping narrative and intense action sequences, the film brings mental health issues into sharp focus.
The story follows a former special forces operative struggling with PTSD who becomes entangled with a brother and sister fleeing dangerous criminal forces. Action drives the plot. However, the film’s deeper aim is to confront the stigma surrounding PTSD, particularly in Filipino society.
Julia Montes, who plays a key role, enthusiastically shared her reasons for joining the project. She explained during a press conference, “It’s about time we talk about PTSD here in the Philippines. It’s often brushed aside, and people are told to ‘sleep it off’ or not express what they feel.” Moreover, she hopes the film will inspire viewers to practice empathy and kindness, emphasizing the importance of recognizing that everyone carries their own burdens.
Director Richard Somes explained that Topakk was conceived during the pandemic, a time marked by uncertainty and fear. “The story began as a reflection of my own anxieties,” he revealed. “It’s a very personal project, shaped by the collective challenges we faced during the lockdown.”
Arjo Atayde, who portrays the lead character, prepared extensively to capture the nuances of PTSD. He described how he incorporated the physical manifestations of the disorder, like involuntary twitches, into his performance. He explained, “We worked on showing his inner struggles through subtle but impactful gestures.”
Topakk premiered internationally at festivals in Cannes, Austin, and Locarno. It then returns to its home audience as part of MMFF’s 50th edition. The film features a strong cast, including Sid Lucero, Enchong Dee, and Kokoy de Santos. Furthermore, It invites viewers to confront mental health issues head-on.
Catch Topakk in cinemas nationwide starting December 25.
