Emerging singer-songwriter Diego Gutierrez, the son of renowned actress Lotlot de Leon and actor Ramon Christopher, is set to tug at heartstrings with his latest single, Inspired by a recent breakup, the track delves deep into the emotional turmoil that often accompanies the end of a long-term relationship.
Gutierrez, who has been steadily building his music career, revealed that “Huling Sayaw” was born out of the pain and heartbreak he experienced after a seven-year romance. “The song is about this time last year when I went through a breakup,” he confessed in an intimate interview. “It was a difficult time, and there were so many emotions to process. This was the first song I wrote after everything happened.”
While the breakup was amicable, Gutierrez admitted that it still carried emotional weight. “Maybe when she hears the song, she’ll know that it’s for her,” he said. “We were just on different timelines, but there are no hard feelings at all. I think it was the best for both of us.”
Gutierrez’s journey into music began during his college years, but it was the pandemic that solidified his desire to pursue it seriously. Songwriting became his outlet for dealing with difficult emotions, serving as a therapeutic escape. “I’m in a much better place now,” he shared. “Songwriting helped because I’m the type of person who doesn’t really open up much. I don’t talk about what I’m going through, so it became my way of expressing myself.”
Drawing inspiration from personal experiences and observations of life, Gutierrez’s music often reflects the complexities of human emotions. His family also plays a significant role in his creative process. “My songs come from my own experiences, but I also like to write about other people’s experiences or anything in general,” he explained. “I first let my siblings and friends hear the songs I make. When I first played ‘Huling Sayaw’ for Ate Janine and Mom, they cried because the song is quite sad.”
With “Huling Sayaw” marking his sixth single, Gutierrez continues to explore his musical style. While he hasn’t pinned down a specific genre, he remains focused on creating authentic and relatable music. “Whatever comes, comes,” he noted. “But hopefully, next year we’ll be able to put out an EP, not an album just yet. For now, I’m just trying to release as much music as I can consistently so it builds up.”
Influenced by artists like John Mayer, Shawn Mendes, and The 1975, Gutierrez also expressed his dream of collaborating with international star Justin Bieber and local talents. “My dream collaboration is with Justin Bieber, and locally, with Zack Tabudlo, Juan Karlos, and Adie because I listen to a lot of their music as well,” he said.
While Gutierrez is currently focused on his music career, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of pursuing acting, like his parents and sister Janine. “Right now, I’m more focused on my singing career. Although I also want to act, the opportunities in music are better at the moment. But if an opportunity in acting comes up, I’ll take it,” he added.
