Enrique Gil returns to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) spotlight with Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital, a chilling horror film blending meta storytelling and the found footage style. The movie marks Enrique’s second MMFF entry, following 2012’s The Strangers. This time, he steps into dual roles as actor and co-producer, showcasing his growing commitment to creative exploration.
A Childhood Love for Horror
“I’ve always been a fan of horror,” Enrique said during a press conference. “Since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed watching comedies and horror movies. It’s been a dream of mine to create and star in a real horror project.”
The film’s meta approach allows cast members to blend their real-life personas with their on-screen roles, adding depth to the narrative. Enrique plays the leader of a team of ghost hunters, joined by stars like Alexa Miro, Jane De Leon, and MJ Lastimosa, alongside tarot reader Raf Pineda and YouTuber Ryan “Zarckaroo” Asurin. Zarckaroo’s real-life explorations of haunted sites partly inspired the film.
The project began when Enrique, a frequent viewer of Zarckaroo’s content, reached out to the vlogger. “I messaged Zarc, saying I loved his work,” Enrique recalled. “He invited me to guest in one of his episodes, and from there, we discussed turning a YouTube concept into a full-length movie.”
Directed by a Horror Expert
Directed by Erik Matti, known for his expertise in horror, and co-produced with Dondon Monteverde, the film aims to break new ground in Philippine cinema. Enrique emphasized the importance of working with a skilled team to bring innovative ideas to life.
“We all want to try something new and take risks,” Enrique shared. “As artists, we shouldn’t limit ourselves.”
Strange Frequencies premieres on December 25 as part of the MMFF lineup, promising audiences a gripping experience this holiday season. For Enrique, it’s a welcome break from his usual December vacations and a step toward pushing creative boundaries.
