The legendary Filipino rock band Eraserheads recently received a hero’s welcome back at their alma mater, the University of the Philippines (UP). They were conferred the prestigious Gawad Oblation Award – the highest honor bestowed by the university. The ceremony, held last Tuesday at the UP Diliman Executive House, was filled with nostalgia and pride. All four members – Ely Buendia, Buddy Zabala, Raimund Marasigan, and Marcus Adoro – were present to receive their medals. Each one beamed with gratitude as they were cheered on by a supportive crowd.
The Gawad Oblation medal, designed by the late artist and professor Leo Abaya, is a beautiful symbol of the university’s values. It combines elements of early Philippine flags, UP’s signature colors, and the iconic Oblation statue. The medal represents the “history and the importance of humanity” in UP’s achievements.
A Celebration of Eraserheads’ Legacy
The ceremony wasn’t just about bestowing an award. It was a celebration of Eraserheads’ immense contribution to the Philippine music scene. Key figures from UP, including President Angelo Jimenez and notable alumni Francis Lumen and Robin Rivera, paid tribute to the band’s enduring legacy.
“Beyond the music,” shared Lumen, CEO of WEU Event Management Services, “I witnessed something extraordinary: their unwavering commitment to their craft.”
The evening also featured a special musical treat – a performance by UP’s very own Symphony Orchestra String Quartet. They arranged a medley of Eraserheads’ greatest hits, including “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” “Ligaya,” and “Alapaap.” The exquisite classical arrangements showcased the band’s music in a whole new light.
With overflowing gratitude, each member of Eraserheads expressed their heartfelt appreciation.
“The Eraserheads would not exist without UP,” declared frontman Ely Buendia.
The band members reminisced about their formative years at UP. They credited the university with shaping their experiences and influencing their music.
Drummer Raimund Marasigan, while acknowledging his incomplete studies, said, “Dito nagsimula kahit na hindi nakapagtapos (This is where it all started, even though we didn’t finish).” He expressed his immense gratitude for the honor, feeling like they were finally graduating.
This prestigious recognition comes at a time when Eraserheads continues to enthrall audiences worldwide. Their “Huling El Bimbo” world tour is in full swing, with upcoming stops in Singapore and Dubai.
A Testament to the Power of University
The Eraserheads’ story is a testament to the powerful impact a university can have on its students. It’s a story of raw talent, unwavering dedication, and a deep connection to their roots – a connection that continues to inspire generations of Filipinos.
