Julie Anne San Jose, a popular Filipino actress and singer, recently faced criticism following her performance at a church in Mindoro. The performance, part of a benefit concert held at the Nuestra Señora del Pilar Parish Church, sparked controversy due to the choice of songs and her outfit.
During the event, San Jose performed ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” and Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory.” Clips of her singing in a long sleeveless dress with a thigh-high slit inside the church quickly went viral on social media. Many netizens and parishioners found the performance “disrespectful” given the sacred location.
Public Apology and Reflection
Following the backlash, Sparkle GMA Artist Center, which manages Julie Anne, took responsibility for the incident. However, San Jose also issued a heartfelt apology on Facebook on October 10, acknowledging the distress her performance caused.
“I am offering my apologies,” she said. “My intentions were to share joy and give support to the church through the benefit concert, but many felt offended by the incident and my performance.”
San Jose further reflected on the situation, calling it a “lesson learned.” She expressed her desire to move forward with understanding and compassion, reiterating that her faith remains strong.
“I truly, sincerely apologize,” she continued. “This is a lesson learned, and I assure everyone it will not be repeated. My faith is unbreakable and cannot be shaken.”
While the Catholic Church does not impose a strict dress code, there are customary guidelines that discourage wearing revealing clothing, especially during mass. Women are typically advised to avoid sleeveless tops and mini skirts, while men are discouraged from wearing shorts. Usherettes often offer shawls to those who do not meet these standards before communion.
Despite the controversy, San Jose received support from her followers, many of whom pointed out that the church should also bear responsibility for organizing a concert in the first place. San Jose’s boyfriend, actor Rayver Cruz, also showed his support by sharing a Bible quote on his Instagram Story.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being mindful of cultural and religious sensitivities when performing in sacred spaces.
