Filipino movie legend Gloria Romero has passed away at the age of 91. Her daughter, Chef Maritess Gutierrez, confirmed the news on January 25, 2025. She shared that Romero died peacefully in her sleep.
Romero’s wake will be held at Arlington Memorial Chapel in Quezon City. Gutierrez expressed gratitude online, saying, “In this time of loss, our family deeply appreciates the prayers, sympathy, and heartfelt condolences we’ve received. She will surely be missed dearly.”
A Star of Philippine Cinema
Gloria Romero was one of the biggest stars of the Golden Age of Philippine Cinema. Over her 70-year career, she acted in more than 250 films and television shows. Many knew her as the “First Lady of Philippine Cinema.”
She won many acting awards, including Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress from FAMAS, the Film Academy of the Philippines, and Gawad Urian.
Some of her most famous movies include “Dalagang Ilocana” (1954), “Nagbabagang Luha” (1988), and “Tanging Yaman” (2000). She also became popular for her role in the sitcom “Palibhasa Lalake.”
Gloria Romero was born on December 16, 1933, in Denver, Colorado. She had a Filipino father and an American mother. She began her career in the late 1950s as a model before becoming an actress.
In February 2024, friends and fellow actors honored Romero on her 90th birthday with a special tribute at the Manila Hotel. The event, organized by her friend Daisy Romualdez, gathered many celebrities and colleagues to celebrate her life and achievements.
Fans and colleagues worldwide shared their sadness and memories of Romero. Her “Palibhasa Lalake” co-star, Amy Perez-Castillo, also mourned her passing.
Gloria Romero’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of actors and moviegoers. Her remarkable talent and dedication to Philippine cinema will never be forgotten.
